THE STORY

Art is supposed to give back to the places that birthed it.

This photograph was created in Nepal and represents the Kumari tradition, part of a country and culture that has profoundly shaped my life.

Nepal is where my journey as a full-time nomad physically began, on the Annapurna trail in 2014. It is a place where I found friendship, belonging and people I now call my brothers and sisters. Today, with communities grieving, families waiting for loved ones and people affected by devastating flooding, I want this photograph to do more than hang on a wall.

THE ARTWORK

This portrait is part of my ongoing photographic work documenting living cultural traditions around the world. The image portrays the visual language of Nepal’s Kumari tradition and forms part of my series Masters of Tradition: Living Lineages, a body of work centered on people carrying cultural heritage forward through generations. The framed canvas being offered here is the actual exhibition piece shown in London.

100% of Proceeds After Printing Cost Go to Nepal

If this artwork sells for US$1,500 or more / GBP equivalent, I will donate all proceeds after the original cost of producing the framed canvas to Nepal flood relief.

(Example: If the artwork sells for: USD3,000, USD2,500 will be donated. I will publish or provide proof of the donation once the artwork is sold and the funds have been transferred.)

Donation Recipient

100% of proceeds after the original printing cost will be donated first to my Nepali sister Reena Gauchan (Los Angeles friends might know her) who is traveling to Nepal next month especially to help on the ground, and then to World Central Kitchen, Red Cross, and Save the Children for Nepal flood relief.

PERSONAL NOTE

My relationship with Nepal goes far beyond photography. It is where my journey as a full-time nomad physically began. A photograph can begin in one place, travel across the world, enter exhibitions and receive recognition and then find its way back to helping the people and place that gave it life.
