Shangri-La, China, 2016
The sun descends slowly behind a Naxi woman in Shangri-La. The Naxi, or Nakhi, are a matriarchal society. Originally, Nakhi women were looked down upon and didn’t have many rights. Instead of revolting or protesting, they quietly learned the nuances of commerce and became master businesswomen. They developed superior physical strength from the labor involving merchandising. There were no female servants, since the time and skills of a Naxi woman were so valuable. With their prominent role in society, the Naxi women turned their culture into a matriarchy.
